JAMES PHILLIPS - DOUBLE NATIONAL CHAMPION!

Our Welsh international badminton star James Phillips cleared up at the recent Welsh nationals winning both the mens and mixed doubles events!

James reported that the doubles was straight forward until the semi finals. He knew he had a tough match against Daniel Font and Oliver Gwilt, one of the top British junior pairs. But James and his partner came through 25-23 21-17.

In the final James' opponents included fellow Ashaway player and Welsh International player Joe Morgan.
"Come the final again confident we could win, however anything can happen in the nationals, so remained 100% focused. We managed to come through the match winning 21-14, 21-14. I am so use to playing with Joe it was strange playing against him. in fairness to Joe he has just come off the back of a serious injury keeping him off the court for almost a year"

In the mixed doubles James team up with with Jordan Hart, an U15 quad singles gold medalist and very talented junior player. Jordan now U17 trains at the South West Wales High Performance Centre where James and Joe lead up the coaching.
"We had a potential tough match in the group defeating the 2nd seeds and doubles partner Nic Strange and Vikki jones 21-11, 21-11. Come the Semi final had finals we had comfortable wins against Daniel font and Kate Ridler 21-15, 21-14 and Oliver gwilt and Bethan higginson 21-16, 21-17"

James has recently signed a new contract with Goode Sport, just in time to recieve a win bonus for the nationals and now looks to go and represent Wales in the Thomas Cup ... hopefully with Joe Morgan.

JOEL HINDS WINS PSA TOUR TITLE

Joel Hinds chalked up his first PSA World Tour title of 2011 in Warsaw beating New Zealander Kashif Shuja to win the Grupa o2 Cup.

Former world No36 Shuja and Hinds fort a close contest with Hinds coming out on top 6-11, 11-5, 11-1, 11-8 in 58 minutes.
"I am very pleased to win this title and have enjoyed my
time here very much," said Hinds "It was another tough game.
"I'd like to say a couple of thank yous: To Rob Owen and other coaches who have helped me and to my sponsors Black Knight & Ashaway.

Last week Joel added: "I was pleased to finish the year on a high as I didn't feel the first half of
the season went as well as I had planned. I also had another good win the week
after in the Canterbury open, beating Oliver Pett (WR66) in the final."

Joel is looking positively towards the 2nd half of the season and will will play two tournaments in January as warm up for my 1st PSA tournament in Feb, which will take place in Belgium (the Move Open 16th-19th Feb).

The ROWE British Grand Prix - Manchester 2011, one of the year's nine PSA World Series championships, will take place at the National Squash Centre in Manchester from 19-25 September.

DARYL SELBY - BRITISH CHAMPION

Daryl Selby beat fellow Ashaway player and World number 1 Nick Matthew to win the British Nationals last weekend. A superb achievement, given the quality of players at this event.

These are Daryl's thoughts sent to us by e-mail just after his win:

"... feels great to be the British Champion and to beat the World number 1 again!"

"I feel the last 6 months have had mostly ups with a few downs. The down was the Commonwealth Games where I lost in the quarter finals to Azlan Iskandar, and had hoped to get a medal. But I have had a lot of ups since then, making the quarter finals of the last 3 World Series events in 2010 and beating the World number 1 Nick Matthew in Kuwait.

2011 has also started well, as I won the Comfort Inn Open in Vancouver where I beat Hisham Ashour in the final (he beat David Palmer 3-0 in the semi). I also won the Edinburgh BSPA, which is the largest British Grand Prix event of the year, and then obviously winning the British Championships was brilliant. The Swedish Open I lost to Nick Matthew in the semi final, I didn't know there was a promotion of Ashaway at the event, although I did get a racket strung there.

My plans for the next 6 months, are Virginia next week for the North American Open, then Canary Wharf. I have a few weeks of training before the European Team Champs in Finland where I will hopefully be in the team for England. Then there are possibly 2 World series events in Egypt in May but we are waiting to hear. Then i am getting married in June! So will have an end of season break then, and start training in July in preparation for next season.

The string (UltraNick 18) is awesome, I am currently trying it at a tighter tension as I played the final last week with it slightly tighter than usual and really liked it. The playability is great, and for me the durability is absolutely fine..." "....it breaks slightly quicker than the PN18 but it never breaks too quickly"

BLACK KNIGHT & ASHAWAY SIGN JOEL HINDS

Black Knight Enterprises and Ashaway Racket Strings are proud to announce a 3 year sponsorship deal with World University champion Joel Hinds. Joel has risen 29 places in the PSA rankings since completing University in 2009 also picking up the British Under 23 title and was crowned the BSPA series champion. Currently ranked world number 88, Joel is aiming to break the top 50 this year and is tipped to enter the elite top 32 next season.

Joel met with Paul Smith, Partner at Goode Sport (European distributor for Black Knight and Ashaway Racket Strings) last week at the Edgbaston Priory Club for a publicity photo shoot with Mike Edwards (Head Squash Professional) and fellow Black Knight Player, British Under 19 champion Julianne Courtice.

Joel said: “I am extremely happy to be offered this 3 year deal, Black Knight is much talked about and I am chuffed to be chosen as the British representative on the tour” “I have used Ashaway strings for the last 3 years and am now using Ultranick 18, the only tricky part has been choosing which racket to play with, there are so many great options at the moment I am trying the Ion Cannon and Ion Drive”.

Mike Edwards said “The partnership between Ashaway, Black Knight and Edgbaston Priory Club has developed well over the last 2 years since I moved to Birmingham. It’s a great signing for Black Knight with the mens under 23 British Champion Joel Hinds and the ladies under 19 British Champion Julianne Courtice, both of who train and base themselves here at EPC”. Paul Smith added “Joel is going to be a great ambassador for us, he is one of the best prospects on the tour and a very popular and likable lad. At over 6 feet tall wearing either his afro or corn rows – he certainly gets noticed! Lets hope that Black Knight and Ashaway do as well!”

Joel got into squash at school as part of an England Squash primary school programme with Paul Hargraves (now owner of PDH Sports). He was quickly spotted as a player with natural talent and was escalated through the England Squash programme with David Campion. Now Joel trains at Edgbaston Priory club 3 times a day: One session solo on court, One session hitting with one of the other pros and also a session working on his EIS strength and conditioning programme.

Joel is preparing for the British Nationals in Manchester on Tuesday this week where he is aiming for a quarter final place, then he leaves for America to enter PSA tournaments in Virginia, Los Angeles, Winnipeg then on to Canada for the Calgary and Montreal tournaments.

ASHAWAY & BLACK KNIGHT EXTEND DEAL WITH DAVID PALMER

Ashaway Racket Strings and Black Knight Enterprises have extended their long-term sponsorship agreements with squash great David Palmer. The two-time World Open Champion has been an Ashaway sponsored player for more than ten years and with Black knight for 3 years. He has recently begun playing with Ashaways new PowerNick^® 19, the world's thinnest squash string. The terms of the agreements were not disclosed.

"I'm very happy about the agreement," said the 34-year-old Lithgow, New South Wales, native who is now US based in Orlando, Florida. "I've been with the company for a long time. I have had a great relationship with them, and obviously love the string, so I was happy that they were still keen to have me on."

Currently ranked number 15 in the world by PSA, Palmer has been Australia's top squash player for most of the past decade. In addition to his two World Open crowns in 2002 and 2006, and four British Open trophies, he has reached the finals in 53 tournaments since turning pro in 1995, and claimed some 26 tour titles. In a remarkable show of consistency, in August of 2010 Palmer completed ten full years in the world's top ten!

Said Ashaway's Steve Crandall, "We are also 'keen' to have David in our stable and are delighted that he continues his career playing with Ashaway string. He is not only a great player, but a great ambassador as well, both for our products and for the sport."

A long-time user of Ashaway's popular PowerNick 18, Palmer recently switched to Ashaway's latest Zyex^®-based innovation, PowerNick 19. After play-testing the string during development, Palmer began using the final production version in tournament play beginning in November 2010. He said the new string "feels excellent," and gives him, "a little bit more power, a little bit more touch. On top of that, it looks really good: the black string with the white Ashaway logo stenciling looks really good and stands out well on the court."

He also likes the durability of PowerNick 19. "The great thing about the PowerNick 18 was that I could never bust the stuff," he said. "PowerNick 19 is not lasting quite as long—it is thinner, after all—but I'm still getting a long time out of my racquets. It's great not to have to worry about restringing my racquets every two or three matches. With this I can go to a tournament and have my racquets all strung up and not have to worry. I can often use the same racquet for the whole tournament which is what I like to do."

Ashaway Introduces PowerNick® 19 —Thinnest Squash String Ever

Ashaway Racket Strings has introduced PowerNick^®19, the thinnest string ever to grace a squash racquet. The new 1.05 mm string utilizes a monofilament core, based on a special formulation developed for Ashaway by Zyex Limited. Designed to provide improved power and performance for both amateur and professional players, PowerNick 19 provides excellent resilience and response, along with a dramatic increase in the ability to grip, cut, slice, and work the ball.

"PowerNick 19 is an evolution of the core construction we developed for its popular stablemate, PowerNick 18," said Ashaway's Steve Crandall. "Unlike our UltraNick series, which uses a multifilament Zyex^® core to provide softer feel, PowerNick strings use a specially constructed core of multi-stranded Zyex monofilaments. PowerNick strings, and especially this new 19 gauge, are designed to provide superior power and playability."

PowerNick 19's Zyex monofilament construction prevents tension loss while the ultra-thin 1.05 mm gauge maximizes ball control. The specially designed outer spiral braid provides good gripping action—enhancing spins and slices—while a proprietary outer coating improves stringing and enhances durability.

"However," added Crandall, "in order to make a string this thin perform the way we wanted, we had to do some real magic in the lab. And we had the help of Zyex Limited, which developed a special proprietary monofilament material just for PowerNick 19."

And perform it does, according to David Palmer, a long-time Ashaway string user who used the glossy black PowerNick 19 to good effect in September's prestigious British Grand Prix and October's Commonwealth Games in India, as well as in a number of other recent PSA tournaments. "This new PowerNick 19 string gives me the power to play hard and fast, but also gives me nice touch and control at the front of the court. So depending on my opponent and how I am physically, I can use it to my advantage."

Gloss black in color, Ashaway's new PowerNick 19 is available in 30 ft sets or 360 ft reels. Ashaway recommends stringing PowerNick 19 up to 30 lbs tension, or about 10–20 percent less than you would string a standard squash string.

Tom Pashley Wins First PSA Title

Black Knight and Ashaway sponsored player Tom Pashley claimed his maiden title on the Professional Squash Association (PSA) World Tour in Peru by winning the $6,000 'Tour De Las Americas' Regatas Squash Open without dropping a game.

The fourth seed from Brighton in Sussex claimed his breakthrough success at Club Regatas in Lima by beating the event's top two seeds.

It was in the semi-finals that 22-year-old Pashley, ranked 118 in the world, despatched top-seeded Mexican Jorge Isaac Baltazar Ferreira 11-8, 11-8, 11-4 in 45 minutes.

In the final, the left-hander faced second seed Esteban Casarino - and battled for 50 minutes to overcome the experienced 34-year-old from Paraguay 11-6, 11-8, 11-9.

Ashaway Sign Daryl Selby

Ashaway Racket Strings has announced the signing of rising squash pro Daryl Selby to a three-year sponsorship agreement. While the terms of the agreement were not disclosed, Selby, who is currently ranked #9 by PSA, has long played with Ashaway's PowerNick® 18 and recently switched to Ashaway's new Zyex-based UltraNick® 18.

"We're delighted to have a rising young star like Daryl join the Ashaway team," said Steve Crandall, Ashaway Vice President of Marketing. "Daryl exemplifies the values we like to see in top players: dedicated, hard-working, family-oriented. Daryl is the kind of guy you just want to see win. It also helps that he's been playing with Ashaway string for years," Crandall added.

Selby joined the PSA Tour in 2004 and rose steadily through the ranks until last year when a string of victories propelled him from 33 into the top ten. Described as "a worker" and known for his grit and determination, Selby ascribes his breakthrough rise to, "a new-found confidence in my own game; a settled home life with my fiancée; [and] having my family around me."

Ashaway Edgbaston Priory Adult Graded Tournament 2010

On 26th and 27th June, Edgbaston Priory Club hosted its second Adult Graded Squash Tournament, supported by Black Knight Squash and Ashaway Racket Strings. Players travelled from all over Great Britain to take part in the event which proved to be a huge success. The players competed in mixed events from intermediate club standard right up to PSA World Professionals. This year’s top seed in an extremely strong A Event draw was Chris Ryder, world number 36.

All players, played in extreme heat due to the weather, but had some great matches which made for an enjoyable weekend.

All finals were competitive and we saw some great squash, especially in grade A event where world top 40 player Chris Ryder took on British U23 champion Joel Hinds.

Both Joel and Chris are based at EPC full time and know each other very well, they knew, especially in the heat, that it was going to be a tough final! Joel went 1-0 down, but battled back and came through with a 3-1 victory, playing at a high intensity.

Joe Morgan and James Phillips have been selected to represent Wales at the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Dehli 3rd - 14th October.

Joe (full name Jonathan) and James have been busy over the last few months ensuring that they won enough points to meet the entry criteria. Joe and James are currently ranked at 52 in the world and are the current Welsh National and Croation Open champions.

RICHARD WRIGLEY ENDS THE SEASON IN STYLE

Richard Wrigley won the Badminton England Satellite Circuit Final this weekend in Milton Keynes. He defeated Josh Green 22-20, 21-19 in the final. This win followed up from Wrigley's win at the Berkshire Open 2 weeks prior, where he beat Toby Penty, Jack Molyeneux and Josh Green on the way to clinch the title and rounded off Richards turbulent season on a high.

Richard is a player who has struggled with injuries, however, he has just wrapped up this 2009/10 season very nicely and he now feels he is playing as well as he has ever done and is currently injury free. Richard is now looking forward to the European University Championships on 14th June. We wish him good luck and hope that he can start the 2010/11 season in the same manner he has ended this one.

NICK MATTHEW WINS ISS CANARY WHARF CLASSIC

Congratulations to Welsh National Champions, Men's Doubles - Joe Morgan and James Phillips

Joe and James beat the defending champions in the final 22-20, 15-21, 21-16
Joe Morgan was also Runner Up with Ashaway Kerry Ann Sheppard in the Mixed. This is a fantastic result for the Ashaway Duo.
Hot on the heels of their national victory Joe and James have just returned from winning the Croatian Open (international EBU event) and have been representing Wales in the Thomas Cup where they won all their matches and were selected represent Wales at 1st men's doubles vs. Ukraine, France and Portugal.
Joe and James are currently ranked 49 in the world rankings and rising. They are very likely to be representing Wales in this years commonwealth games.
Joe and James both use ZyMax 67 at 30lbs.

We are very proud of them, Well done Joe and James.

JAMIE NEIL SCOTTISH NATIONAL CHAMPION!

Jamie Neil is the newly crowned Men's doubles Scottish National Champion.
A packed crowd at Bell's Sports Centre witnessed a thrilling 12-21, 21-8, 21-18 final in which Jamie and his partner defeated the defending champions who were looking to claim their 3rd title in 3 years.

An interesting sub plot is that Jamie does not have funding from Badminton Scotland and has not been able to train with the Scottish national team for this reason. Jamie is a very aproachable and well liked chap, coaching and playing badminton are his passion and he is an excellent ambassador for Ashaway. We are literally thrilled for him at his achievement .... as if this wearn't enough the following weekend Jamie went on to beat fellow Ashaway players David Forbes and Stewart Kerr in the Glasgow Open Final - superb stuff. Congratulations Jamie!

25 high level players in several countries performed the tests, the score and quotes speak for themselves:

Silver Medal For Rajeev Bagga

Ashaway's Rajeev Bagga's quest for gold faltered at the final hurdle when he was narrowly beaten (16-21, 21-17, 20-22) by Artemy Karpov of Russia.

The result is Bagga's first defeat to any Deaf competitor in 20 years of competition and his silver medal follows Singles gold at the previous five Deaflympics.

Bagga was a point away from glory at 20-19. But the Russian was returning Rajeev's smashes strongly and made it 20-all, before edging ahead to 21.

On the vital point, Karpov played a light drop serve which Bagga left, and it ooked to have landed out. But the umpire judged that the shuttlecock had fallen onto the line and Karpov fell to his knees in triumph.

Karpov - on a reputed €100,000 to win the title - took the first set when a netted Bagga backhand gave him a match point, which he took.

Immediately after the set, Team GB Badminton Manager Janet Thompson had to stride onto court to ask for a third Russian official to be removed, as only two are permitted courtside.

In the second set, Bagga went from 11-15 down to 18-15 ahead and took the set five points later when he had Karpov straining and failing with a shot from the floor.

The quality of the badminton on show was superb and the two players exchanged the early points with some fierce rallies in the final set.

Karpov stayed in touch with Bagga throughout the last set and it really was very close to call. The British fans in the gallery were about to explode when Bagga reached 20 points but it was not to be.

Rajeev - who first won gold in Christchurch 1989 and carried his run through Sofia 1993, Copenhagen 1997. Rome 2001 and Melbourne 2005 - afterwards donated his silver medal to Lithuanian competitor Tomas DovyDaitis who had badly damaged his ankle in competition.

As one onlooker commented, "Rajeev may have lost the gold but he still has a heart of gold"

1. Nick Matthew - Nick beat James Wilstrop in an amazing 5 set match to become the 2009 British Open Champion. After an extended time out injured, there can no be no doubt that Nick is back to his best winning the epic final 8-11, 11-8, 7-11, 11-3, 12-10 in 2hours and 3 minutes.

2. Madeline Perry - The Irish number 1 and world number 8 who managed to improve on her Semi-Final place last year, reaching the British Open Final, she beat world No. 1 Nicol David en route to the Final. Well done Maddy!

STOP PRESS: Both Nick and Madeline use Ashaway Powernick 18. We've had a few enquiries as to the colour of the string used by some of the professionals. The answer is that some players including Nick and Maddy, due to contractual reasons have to use a 'white' string in their rackets, therefore Nick and Maddy both use Powernick 18 in Silver as opposed to the normal red colour in order to meet their contract. It is the same product, just a different colour!

ASHAWAY PLAYERS FLY THE RED DRAGON

Ashaway's Welsh internationals Joe Morgan and James Phillips (world rank 59) recently competed in the US Open Grand Prix, their first tournament of the 2010 Commonwealth Games qualification campaign. In the first round they comprehensively defeated Tuan La and Ba Su(USA) before pulling off a fine three set victory against former World no 1 and Olympic medallist Rudi Gunawan and former Indonesian international Ignatius Rusli. Unfortunately 2005 world champions Tony Gunawan and Howard Bach proved too strong in the quarter finals before going on to secure the title.

After the match Morgan said "Overall we can be pleased with a quarter final result in a grand prix tournament and its a good start to the Commonwealth qualification campaign". Phillips added "Its was a great experience to play such a quality doubles pair, it was a good match".

Morgan also teamed up with Ashaway's newly signed Kerry Ann Shepperd in the mixed doubles (World rank 67) but were defeated by Canada's Alvin Lau and former World semi finalist Xuelian Jiang of China.

Court Jesters, Wimbledon, Ashaway and Ibuprofen - What a combination!

At Goode Sport we're recovering from the annual Wimbledon Summer Invitational Team tournament sponsored by Ashaway.

The tournament consists of teams of 6 players, of county standard or above who battle it out over 2 days of matches and serious saturday night party to find an eventual winner. This years winners were the Court Jesters, lead by Kristain Roebuck and Steve Higgins, the team featured 4 other full time players from the south west of England. The 'Jesters' scooped the prize money in a closely contested final match against 'The Team with No Name' featuring former world Silver medalist Karen Beckman and her son Ben amongst some other very talented individuals.

The Ashaway team (Ashaway and Ibuprofen) ended up in 7th place out of the 14 teams that entered. The original Ashaway line up suffered quite an injury list in the run up to the tournament, but the players who stepped in showed great spirit in helping (and dragging repectively) Ashaway's Mark sellwood and Goode Sports own Paul Smith up to 7th spot. Paul is in the office this week still complaining of aches and pains but loved every minute of it.

Ashaway would like to thank all the competitors, wimbledon club and particularly Kate Manning (pictured at her control desk) for putting on such a fantastic tournament that Ashaway are so very proud to be associated with.

SUSSEX ELITE:

Team Ashaway were out in force snatching the Mens Doubles and Mixed doubles titles at the recent Sussex Elite Finals.

In the Men’s Doubles Ashaway's Peter Mills togehter with his partner Robin Middleton defeated Ben Beckman and Simon Hardcastle 21-13 21-9. But Mills’ hopes of a double title were dashed in the Mixed final when he lost out to Ashaway's Joel Gayle and Caroline Westley 21-15 21-13.

DWARF CHAMPIONSHIPS:

Nial McVeigh reached the final of the Ulster National Dwarf games losing out narrowly in a close 3 sets 15-21, 23-21, 16-21. Nial was quickly back on his feet at the German International which he won the final against a seasoned international from germany, Nial won in two straight sets 21-15, 21-11.

RACHEL HOWARD:

Rachel reached the semi finals of the Slovak Open, retiring at 19-19 in the second set. She had beaten the 2nd seed in her first round and was looking and feeling strong before she unfortunately had to retire. Rachel has recently heard that she will recieve continued funding from badminton england, despite the budgets cuts, it's great to see that Badminton England still have faith in Rachel above so many others (as do we!).

DAVID PALMER WINS CANARY WHARF CLASSIC!

David Palmer is the Canary Wharf Classic Champion after defeating the current holder James Wilstrop in a gripping final. David came through 11/9, 12/10, 8/11, 11/7 in a match that lasted 65 minutes.

David adds the title to his British Open victory earlier in this season and this is actually David's 25th PSA title. Well done David!

Black Knight and Ashaway have recently set up a 2 year agreement with the squash and racketball team at Edgbaston Priory Club.

Edgbaston Priory Club is firmly established as one of Britain’s premier racquet clubs. The club has 10 local league sides, 5 national club sides and is intent on establishing itself as a midlands base for many of the up and coming UK and the worlds top professionals.
It is a private members club with over 3,000 members.
The Club is used to holding major events - the Davis Cup, British Open and World Open Squash Championships.
It is set in 12 acres of beautiful grounds with 29 tennis courts, 10 squash courts, heated indoor and outdoor swimming pools, spa, a licensed bar and restaurant.
The Club dates back over 130 years and has nurtured 4 Wimbledon Champions and several National champions

Leyla Ogan (centre left) rackets manager has built up a new squash coaching team of Jon Tate and Mike Edwards (centre right), who are moving squash at the club forward. Edgbaston (and England!) player Ant Graham is celebrating a double achievement! in Germany earlier this month Ant became the U19 European champion and simultaniously the U19 british number 1. Ant has recently signed with Ashaway and is currently using Powernick 18, he's pictured here with his european trophy. Ant was joined in Germany by Julianne Courtice (U17 british open champion) who is also based at the Priory and sponsored by Black Knight / Ashaway.

Other players using Ashaway strings at the Priory include: Victoria Lust (world no. 58) and Joel Hinds (recently turned full time professional).

Jo Goode - 5 Top Tips

Jo Goode, Olympic Bronze Medalist and now Coach at the Ashaway Academy has compiled 5 Top Tips to quickly improve your game:

1. Return of Short Service
Make sure the back swing and follow though are as short as possible. This both encourages and enables you to take the shuttle as early as possible and adds control

2. Men's/Ladies Doubles Play
If you play the shuttle to the net, you MUST follow the shuttle in. This will encourage the opposition to lift.

3. Defense
When defending try to use a short back swing and short follow through. This will enable you to quickly recover and be ready for the next shot as soon as possible - Increasing your chances of regaining the upper hand.

4. Net Play
When at the net - keep your racket at eye level. For the shots you will be playing at the net, this is the optimum height and minimises the amount you will have to move your racket to hit the shuttle enabling you to take the shuttle as early as possible.

5. Maintain your key equipment
Have your racket re-strung and re-griped regularly, strings will slacken off and grips will wear. A good rule of thumb is to restring and regrip at least as many times a season as you play per week. Shoes, ensure they are not covered in dust or worn out.

BUCS Badminton - Ashaway Individual Championships

Ashaway sponsored the BUCS badminton individual championships for the 3rd year running and this year saw the best tournament to date.

The event is like no other, firstly there are the huge draws with around 400 competitors, but what really makes this tournament is the atmosphere that the students create which is electric, from the 1st round of the singles all the way to the mixed doubles finals, the courts are surrounded by supporters chanting, cheering and even bongo drums. The team kits are superb and some of the customes and mascots even better! They know how to have a good time too, the saturday night party (before the finals on Sunday!) is legendary.

As well as the BUCS representatives the tournament is run by a team of volunteers who work from 8.45am till 9.00pm each day, the tournament really would be nothing without them. Ashaway were on hand to help where they could at shuttlecock control, and we had support from Maurice Robinson Sports with the Ashaway exhibition, stringing service and shop (our personal thanks to them).

This years championships saw the very highest standard of competition, world ranked players included Richard Vaughan (former world no. 7) won the singles title, Richard has used Ashaway string throughout his career and despite a rest from competitive badminton was still very strong throughout the gruelling 3 day schedule.

Ashaway sponsored players at the event included Richard Wrigley (mens singles and doubles quarter finalist), Ivor Griffiths (mixed doubles bronze medalist).

Shuttlecocks - Ashaway supplied International shuttles for the tournament and the feedback on them was excellent, it was said that they were the best quality shuttle used at the tournament in recent memory.

JULIANNE COURTICE - WINS U17 BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIP

Our latest recruit to the thriving Edgbaston Priory Club, Julianne Courtice, who has a national ranking of England Squash U17 Number 3, rose to the challenge on 26th October at Wimbledon squash club to become U17 British Champion.

Julianne committed to a demanding schedule set by coach, Mike Edwards to train towards this event, as her goal, was to excel in the British championships.

Julianne, appearing in her first National Championship Final after coming through her semi final against a tough opponent Harriet Ingham (Surrey) 3-0, went head to head with Emily Whitlock on Sunday in the final of the U17, knowing a challenge was in front of her.

A pre-match talk with her coach Mike Edwards, kept a nervous finalist, calm and determined.

Rajeev Bagga adds another title to his extensive badminton CV by wining the mens Singles and Doubles titles in the over 40's category at the European Veterans championships in Spain.

Rajeev is the current All England veterans champion and deaf world champion (a title he has held for over 5 years). And is currently taking the veterans world stage by storm. Originally from India, Rajeev is now a British citizen residing in Coventry and is a very welcome addition to the Ashaway players team.

From CatGut to Zyex Badminton String Technology is Changing

The earliest strings were most likely natural gut (sheep or beef intestines mistakenly called 'catgut') or possibly silk.

Over the centuries gut string was typically manufactured from very thin strips of beef intestine, chemically treated and twisted together. To maintain strength and durability, gut strings were quite thick. Even so, the natural gut string had something really good going for it-the property of "resilience." Also known as rebound or the "trampoline effect," good resilience translates into more power.

The era of synthetic strings began shortly after 1939 when DuPont developed nylon to compensate for the shortage of rubber brought on by World War II. Nylon strings quickly replaced natural gut strings because they cost less, were stronger, more durable and did not tend to absorb moisture, which caused unpredictable loss of tension. However, players stringing with nylon sacrificed some of the feel and resilience of natural gut. On the other hand, synthetic strings could be made thinner, which reinstated a little of the lost resilience, and provided less wind resistance, offering better feel and power. From this time forward, manufacturers have sought to provide increasingly narrower gauge strings to improve this increased feel and power.

The first nylon string offerings were designed in a monofilament construction. They were strong, but not very responsive, and tended to stretch with a lot of play. In the late '40s and early '50s, Ashaway developed the first multifilament nylon strings known as Multi-Ply® and Pro-fected®. These strings gave much more responsive feel and control of the shuttle. And, although they could be made narrower than monofilament strings - 19 and 20 gauge (.85 mm - 1.00 mm) - their multifilament construction also made them stronger.

The '60s and '70s saw Ashaway continuing to develop thinner, stronger, and more responsive multifilament strings. From the 19- and 20-gauge string of the previous decade, the strings edged toward 21 gauge (.75 mm - .85 mm) as the diameter of choice. Ashaway's Vantage® string was the product name for the most popular version of these strings.

In the '80s and '90s, Ashaway perfected microfilament technology, and string girth shrank further with 21 and 21 Micro (.70 mm - .75 mm), becoming the standard gauges. The most common badminton strings from Ashaway in that era were Rally® and Flex®.

In the current millennium, schools continue to use 20-gauge string, and that is for cost purposes only. 21 gauge is still the most common in badminton circles, but 21 Micro, which is 10% thinner, is rapidly gaining in popularity due to the improved durability of microfilament technology. Strings such as MicroPower™ and MicroLegend™ are examples of micro-gauged, multifilament strings that offer excellent power without sacrificing durability.

Now, a half-century after nylon stepped in to offer benefits natural gut users couldn't turn down, players will be able to enjoy the best of both worlds. On the horizon are 22-gauge badminton strings made from new materials such as Zyex®. These strings will combine superior strength and tension holding properties with a level of playability that has never been seen before.

Congratulations to David Palmer, British Open Champion!! This is Davids 4th British Open Title!

David Came through an epic and gripping final to win in 5 sets to win 11-9, 11-9, 8-11, 6-11, 13-11 (3-2) in 111 minutes.
Ending with an amazing fully stretched cross court shot of the very tip of his frame.

In the interview after the match David said:

“I was playing good squash in the first two games, and in the middle of the third game, I relaxed a bit.

“The challenge for me is to keep the speed around the court, not the fitness, I still consider myself as one of the fittest players on the circuit one of the fittest guys on the circuit.

David thanked his Coach Shawn, his physio Pat, His wife Mel and daughter Kayla for their support. David also added that he was

Wycliffe College are into squash in big way, head coach Mike Edwards (pictured middle far left, with his squad) has had a great year with the team. Highlights include a victory for the U15 in the Nation Schools championship, appearences at the British Closed, British Open, Avon Open, Welsh Open & the Solent Open to name a few. This together with a bunch of local and national victories - too many to mention. The squad are pictured here in their Ashaway dry tec shirts. The College is a real hot bed for junior squash and they are loking forward to more of the same in the 2008/09 season.

ASHAWAY WELSH PAIR FLYING HIGH!

Ashaway's Welsh pairing of James Phillips and Joe Morgan are enjoying a great run of form.

Welsh nationals - James and Joe were runners up in the mens doubles. In the mixed, Joe was number one seed but unfortunately had to withdraw at the semi final stage due to his partner being injured. All was not lost as this left the door open for James to win the title!

Thomas Cup - Joe and James went on to represent Wales at Thomas Cup in Holland. Wales won their group despite being unseeded, defeating Austria 3-2 , Switzerland 4-1 and Czech 3-2. Unfortunately bowing out 3-0 vs Germany in quarter finals.

The Welsh match of the tournament saw Joe and James against Austria the score was 2-2 going into their doubles match as the decider (vs a top Austrian pairing of Koch&Lahnsteiner). The first set went to Aunstria 21-9 but Joe and James rallied to win the following 2 sets 21-19 and 21-19 taking the rubber and the match tie, send Wales through to the Quarter Finals. During the tournament Joe and James were both undefeated, Joe defeated the Czeck Number 1 ranked pair and James even stepped in and won a singles match for Wales.

Joe and James both use the Kevlar 7000SQ racket strung with Powergut 65.

INDEPENDANT BADMINTON STRING COMPARISON

This week we have been getting a lot of email communication from badminton customers and players around the world about a badminton string diameter comparison recently posted on The Badminton Central web forum. Please go to the following link to see this comparison:

We thought you would find this interesting as it points out something that Ashaway has known for a long time - Yonex' strings are much thicker than what is stated on the package (and much thicker than Ashaway's comparable strings).

The result is that Yonex' strings are perceived by players as being more durable, less prone to string movement in the racket and better at holding tension when compared to Ashaway's string with the same label gauge.

In reality, it is not a fair comparison as thinner strings (while playing with better feel and resilience) generally slide back and forth more in the frame and break more frequently (easily) on off center hits.

I hope this diameter data from an independent source will help improve your understanding of the different badminton string products in the market and their diameter/performance characteristics.

Ashaway Racket Strings has signed squash great Natalie Grainger to a multi-year sponsorship agreement, company officials announced today. Grainger, who won the US Nationals in March after switching to Ashaway's new SuperNick^® XL Micro, is currently ranked World Number 4 on the Women's International Squash Players Association ("WISPA") Tour.

"Having Natalie as part of our team is a great coup for Ashaway Racket Strings," said Steve Crandall, Ashaway's Vice President. "Not only is she a great player and a great coach, but as WISPA President, she is one of the true leaders in the sport and one of the most engaging people around. We expect she will be a force in our industry for many years to come."

Grainger is a former WISPA world number one ranked player and has been ranked in the top ten in the world for seven of the last ten years. She is President of the Board of WISPA, the governing body for the women's worldwide professional squash tour. Grainger is also Head Coach for the US Under 23 development program and an advisor to DC Squash Academy, an inner-city youth program that uses squash, combined with academic tutoring and mentoring, to enrich children's lives. She was formerly the US Junior Women's Team Assistant Coach, which finished a record-tying 4th at the 2005 Junior World Championships.

For her part, former South African and recently minted American citizen Natalie is also happy to be on the team of the only U.S. string maker. "Ashaway's been a leader in stringing for many many years," she said. "I've actually used Ashaway at different times for a fair bit of my career, and I've always been very impressed with their string. So I'm really happy that they've decided to sign me."

Ashaway is the Official String of USA Racquetball, the Professional Squash Association and the Women's International Squash Players Association.

Rachel Howard returned from injury only 3 weeks ago, however she was on fire at the Elite Tournament in wimbledon this weekend, Rachel won the ladies singles in a close final 21-16, 13-21 & 21-19.

What tension should I have my racket strung at?

String Tension:

There are two ways to string your racquet for power, and two ways to string for control. Both thin strings and low string tension make the stringbed more resilient, to generate greater "trampoline effect" and more power. Conversely, thick strings and high tension make the stringbed stiffer, and the flatter surface aids ball control.
So does string gauge really matter? After all, you can make any string, thick or thin, tighter or looser. Or does tension really matter, since you can choose a string that's thinner or thicker?
Yes to both questions, because there are other factors contributing to power and control besides the trampoline effect, and other considerations besides power and control.
Many of us are concerned with durability, from a number of different standpoints. First and most obvious is the cost of replacing strings that have either broken or lost their tension. Second is the probability of a lost point every time a string breaks in the middle of a rally. Third is the inconvenience of getting the stringing done, and perhaps being without your favorite (or only) racquet for a time.
Thicker strings are more durable than thinner ones of similar construction, but tension presents a more complex picture. If you string at high tension and you're a really hard hitter, then you're probably going to pop a lot of strings, and the ones that don't pop will lose tension rapidly. If you string at high tension and you're a touch player, breakage won't be a big problem, and tension loss will be slower. If you string at really low tension, you won't pop a lot of strings, and tension loss won't be a problem, but you may wear them out by abrasion, because at low tension the strings tend to saw back and forth against each other.
The molecules in racquet string fibers tend to be coiled up when they're under no tension, and these coils get straightened as the string is stretched. After the string has been under tension for a while, the molecules take a "set" in their straightened configuration and stop trying to spring back to their original shape. That's what causes tension loss. Because thin strings have to be stretched further than thick ones in order to achieve the same tension, they are more susceptible to tension loss.
But thin strings have several advantages as well. They dig a bit deeper into the surface of the squash ball, generating better traction for more spin control. They create less wind resistance, allowing the racquet to be swung faster. Finally, they weigh less, which should also boost swing speed and racquet maneuverability. (I weighed sets of 17 and 18 gauge strings of similar construction, and the difference was 1.82 grams, or 15%-not a huge difference, but maybe enough to make a difference.)
Thin strings and thick strings feel different at equal tensions. You might think that the thinner string would feel looser, but it doesn't always work that way. Trampoline effect is a function of how much further those molecular coils can stretch when the ball hits the string. Because the coils are already stretched pretty straight in thin string, there is less resilience left in them. So to attain a comparable "feel," you actually have to tension the thinner string a bit lower than the thicker one.

Here's a quick summary:
Thin strings provide more trampoline power, deeper ball penetration, and offer lower wind resistance and weight, while thick strings offer greater control stiffness and durability. High stringing tension provides greater control stiffness, but is more susceptible to "catastrophic" breakage, while low tension provides greater trampoline power, and is subject to more abrasion failures.
